Art video by Bruno Niel, an idea to add some spice to your presentation

Bruno Niel art videoA  very short but interesting art video experiment by Bruno Niel.  In the video you see varying shots from a person playing with his food in a cafeteria.  Although you have to use a zoom sparingly, in this video it adds value to the experience.

Experiment Design by Bruno Niel.

Perhaps a bit more challenging to create presentational videos in this way, but it is a refreshing way to  wake up the viewer if the presentation is a long one.  Watch how Bruno makes clever use of transitions. They are not distracting, yet they are part of the rhythm. The ones he uses are probably custom-made but you can easily exchange them with left- or right wipe transitions which you find in almost any video editor package.

For presentations, I would not keep up with this fast pace all tghe time.  Only use it to get the attention  of viewers every 20 to 30 seconds.  I would certainly use the zoom only functional. If it is about a product, zooming in on a detail is added value, while zooming for the effect is bad news for presentations because the viewer gets distracted from the narration.  The reason is that our brain has to grasp what is going on on screen while listening at the same time.  Since we seldom listen and view with the same amount of attention, one sense will overrule the other and generally, it is the visual sense that takes over.

It is worthwhile to review this video several times because you might not catch the brilliance of this little eperiment at first sight.  In fact, viewing sample videos repeatedly is a good way to analyse someone’s work because the first time, you watch as someone who is prepared to go with the flow, while after a couple of times, you begin to notice little interesting details you haven’t seen before. A short movie like this is therefore a great example to practice the skill of analytic viewing.

Don’t forget to have a look at Bruno’s work on Vimeo.  As said in earlier art video posts, artists lead the way to innovation, therefore we should show them our respect for the efforts they make to express new ideas.

That’s the disadvantage of showing videos from other people. They end up being deleted at some point. Thanks for sharing.
