HD art video on YouTube

I uploaded a heavy art video on YouTube today and the result was really stunning in HD mode ! I was even surprised about the playback rate.  Ok, it stutters a little bit here and there, but on the whole, HD on YouTube is becoming a good experience. No wonder Cnet was so excited about YouTube a couple of months ago.

It took me about 4 hours to upload a 348Mb video of 1280×720 pixels – 03:53 minutes, with MPEG-4 compression and a bitrate of 1500Kbps (kilobits per second).
As you can see, contrary to what I always advocate, I did use some compression because otherwise, the file would have been a whopping 39 Gigabytes.  And with a bitrate of 1500Kbps (kilobits per second) you barely notice the compression. In short, with High definition video, some compression is unavoidable.  Even a short video like mine ends up as a 348Mb file with compression.

It actually would be nice if Youtube offered FTP uploads someday.  I would certainly agree to pay a reasonable subscription fee for an option like that.

OK, so which video I have been rambling on about?  Without any shame or remorse, it is one of my own artworks. :-)
Here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5brSa2RtNsM&feature=channel_page

Hope you like it :-)

Now, why did I upload a 1280×720 video, while it doesn’t show up in that size on YouTube?  The reason is that YouTube is constantly working on its capabilities and there will be a day when real high definition can be shown on the web.  Therefore, my art video is ready for the (near) future and I do not need to update it when the moment is there.  At the moment, in HD mode, the video shows an impressive resolution of 1024×650 pixels.  When played full screen, you barely see the difference with the original movie, although it does stutter here and there, but that is to be expected.
