Private Web Distribution on AWS – how to tutorial

Tutorial on how to setup a private web distribution on AWS. There are quite a few changes on the AWS console in a good sense. It is much easier now to set up. Since this has an impact on everyone using web distributions via CloudFront, you may want to have a look at this tutorial, which was written for S3Media LinkSafe™ Lite users (a free plugin to serve protected download links on WordPress):

The tutorial explains step by step how to setup:

  1. a bucket
  2. a web distribution for private content
  3. set the correct permissions for files
  4. Upload files (any file type).

If you used a different process in the past, the changes won’t influence exisiting web distributions.  The AWS console makes it now much easier to set it up. For those of you new to this concept: web distributions serve files from Amazon edge servers close to the visitor (also called download distributions). This is very useful to provide download links images for an international audience.
I hope this is useful to you.  If you have any comments or questions, leave a comment below.

  1. Thanks for the tutorial.. Can I create the bucket and the distribution list directly from the Amazon AWS platform, or does it need another plugin?

    • Hi Steve,
Although you can do everything via the AWS console, there are client apps that make things easier for you. One of the best around is CloudBerry S3 Explorer (Win) or Cyberduck (for Mac).
