Embed a YouTube video on WordPress 4.3 or higher

Embedding a YouTube video on WordPress 4.3 (or higher) is very easy. Here is a short tutorial how to accomplish this.

Go to YouTube and select the video you want to embed.

Copy the URL (or “link” in normal speak) in the address bar, then create a new post on your WordPress site.
Now, before you paste the URL, you need to write some text, so that search engines have something to chew on, otherwise it won’t be easy to find your post.

Give a little information on the video, like this:

Type intro text
When you are done with the intro text, make sure the cursor is placed just after the intro text, then add the read more tag, so that if you are showing the latest posts on your home page, the videos themselves remain hidden until the visitor clicks on the title and opens the post.
Click on the read more icon:

When you have done that, you get a dotted line underneath the intro text:

Below it, you paste the link to the YouTube video.  As soon as you do that, you will see that the link turns into a video player:

Finally, write as usual the description, keywords, select the category and whatever else you do in your workflow. Then, save the post. You can preview your post before you actually publish it, to make sure the video works.

That is all there is to it.

The wonderful thing is that if you use a responsive theme, the player shrinks and enlarges according to the browser window.
Disadvantage: mobile often do not support YouTube videos.  If this is important to you, you may want to include a hyperlink to the video underneath the player, like this:

For mobiles: Play from YouTube

I hope this is useful to you. 🙂
